The Heart’s Desire, the Dwelling of Light|Peace & Joy

Spread the love

Rejoice in the Lord always… And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:4–7

Long before many wishes are even spoken, peace and joy have already transcended cultures and time, becoming one of humanity’s most simple and heartfelt blessings.

In the Chinese context, peace suggests physical and emotional well-being, free from illness and turmoil—the very foundation of a smooth life. Joy, on the other hand, reflects a deep inner fulfillment, a quiet and enduring sense of gladness. In the Bible, these two words point not merely to fleeting comfort or surface-level happiness, but to a profound peace and hope rooted in faith—a refuge in the storm, a light in the darkness, an inner posture of steadfastness.

Continuing our Four Seasons Imagery series, which features Chinese characters interpreted through enamel, this time we draw inspiration from the phrase Peace & Joy, artfully merging the structural beauty of Chinese script with the translucent craft of plique-à-jour enamel. Through the meeting of light and color, these characters carry a prayer for inner calm and contentment.

Unlike the dense texture of other enameling techniques, plique-à-jour is a craft of intentional openness. Its translucent, frameless design echoes the luminous stained glass of Gothic cathedrals, while also resonating with the subtle interplay of solid and void in Jiangnan-style lattice windows. It allows light and color to flow freely, creating a delicate, radiant visual language—serene and bright.

Drawing from our own reflections, we used color to uniquely interpret Peace & Joy—and perhaps, your version looks entirely different in light and shadow.

Peace is rendered in gentle, cool tones:
Blue like Ru kiln celadon, green like spring waters of Jiangnan—serene and composed… not an escapist stillness, but the ability to remain steady amidst chaos. It embodies the ideal state of “inner harmony and outer calm” in Chinese culture, while also echoing the biblical peace that surpasses circumstances—an unshakable stillness of the soul.

Joy, in contrast, unfolds in soft, warm hues:
Pink like the first flush of dawn, yellow like the morning light—lively yet humble… like optimism rooted deep within, surfacing quietly in moments of true delight. It expresses both a cultural love for life and hope for beauty, and aligns with the promise from Scripture: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.”

The earrings follow the brushstroke structure of Chinese characters—horizontal and vertical lines with intentional space in between—resulting in a design that feels light and airy. Each enamel color is hand-blended, fired, and polished through repeated processes, creating clear, luminous tones and harmonious light play. At over 800°C, powdered glass fuses with precious metal, weaving light and color into unique and nuanced layers. Every piece holds its own distinct character.

Handcrafted enamel jewelry is not only a testament to time—it is a tangible expression of a way of life. Peace & Joy, worn by your side, becomes more than a greeting; it is a silent blessing, ever present in every moment worth celebrating, and in those quiet times when we must tend to ourselves. It becomes a gentle protection—felt and real.

May we carry an unstealable peace through the storms of life, and let joy walk with us always.
