After the “Minor Cold” solar term, as the years quietly pass, the body tends to feel colder. Even in Shenzhen, where snow never falls, one often needs a hot water bottle at night to fall asleep.
Yet, the pristine, crystalline, and translucent snowflakes always hold an inexplicable fascination. In my youth, in my hometown, I once tried to catch a falling snowflake in my hand, marveling as it slowly melted on my fingertips… The beauty of nature is fleeting and irreproducible, which makes it all the more unforgettable. This longing once took the form of a silver “Winter Sprite” snowflake pendant; now, at last, it can be revisited in a manner more faithful to the delicate scene of “snow drifting lightly with each step, swirling softly around the waist.”
The expressive potential of enamel requires endless hands-on experimentation. Over the past two months of exploration, time seemed to stretch… Through repeated trials, I gradually discovered how to create depth in the silver flakes over a translucent blue base. Tiny fragments of silver shimmer subtly beneath the surface, giving the piece a natural sense of dimension, like a frozen moment in winter…
Subsequently, much effort was spent exploring how to layer the icing-like texture atop the smooth base to evoke the realism of actual snow crystals. Even a millimeter of deviation could cause the snowflake’s shape to disperse, losing its delicacy; a slight excess of heat would smooth the surface too much, diminishing the tactile quality. Unlike conventional glossy enamel, the icing enamel is fine and soft. It is not cold and glassy but resembles the thin frost of early morning, with a delicate, downy texture. When light falls on it, the glow spreads gently, creating a texture like scattered snow.
Snowflakes take countless forms, each following its own path as it falls. Thus, the Winter Sprite earrings are designed asymmetrically. Left and right capture two distinct moments from the same snowfall; they do not repeat, yet they echo each other.
The deep blue base faintly reveals shadows of snow drifting, interacting with the granular snow in the foreground. When light strikes, it reflects a serene depth, as if snowflakes are floating lightly; when viewed from another angle, the snow shadows in the background shift accordingly, like a fleeting dance in the wind.
Fortunate to capture this sentiment before the “Major Cold” solar term. “Major Cold,” the last solar term of winter—when all life withdraws into the harsh cold, quietly gathering strength in stillness, awaiting the arrival of spring.
May this touch of translucent snow accompany you through the long winter, gently leading you into the revival of all things in spring.
